A group of concerned animal activists is holding a silent demonstration this Wednesday, January 8th, to encourage Southwest Airlines to sever its longstanding ties with partner SeaWorld, whose recent exposure from the documentary film “Blackfish” has caused an extraordinary amount of backlash nationwide. The basic assertion of the film is that Orcas are not suited to perform in captivity and uses the tale of Tilikum, a captive whale responsible for the death of a SeaWorld trainer, as the backdrop.
Southwest would not be alone in dropping relations with the water park giant – several musicians including Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick, Heart, and REO Speedwagon, have dropped out of the company’s “Brew and Barbecue” series due to allegations made in the film.
In parallel with the protest, a Change.org petition is circulating with over 27,000 signatures urging Southwest to stop supporting SeaWorld.
The demonstration will take place on at 11:00 am at Dallas Love Field, home to Southwest’s headquarters.
